Directorate “Bulgarian Citizenship” is a specialized administration within the structure of the Ministry of Justice and has the following basic functions:

1. Accepts applications and proposals concerning Bulgarian citizenship files respective correspondence.
2. Sends the correspondence for coordination with the interested institutions.
3. Makes preparations for the meetings of the Citizenship Council and prepares the draft records.
4. Draws up the draft reports to the Minister of Justice with motivated opinion on each correspondence;
5. Draws up draft proposals to the President (Vice-President) of the Republic of Bulgaria for issue or non-issue of decrees regarding Bulgarian citizenship, as well as draft decrees.
6. Informs in writing the applicant about the decision made.
7. Issues the certificates stipulated under the Bulgarian Citizenship Act.
8. Makes notifications to the municipalities or mayor’s offices at the respective person’s permanent address for entry of changes of citizenship into the civil status registers and to the Minister of Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for issue or seizure of identity cards.
9. Keeps the ledger and registers under Section 38 of the Bulgarian Citizenship Act.
10. Prepares replies and standpoints on problems and issues connected with the application of the Bulgarian Citizenship Act and citizenship-related bylaws.
